Subject: Update on Tom in Haiti
Friends,
Thanks for your continuing prayers for Tom and for the work going on in
Haiti.
Tom was fortunate to secure a seat on the State Dept's flight on Saturday
morning, along with some other relief workers, news reporters, and Hillary
Clinton. Direct communication since he has been on the ground has been
brief so far, though it's been great to have some updates. Tom has been
involved with Haiti for more than 25 years - his first reaction when he
arrived was that the situation seemed very surreal. The needs are immense.
Although Food for the Hungry's office survived the quake without damage,
neighboring buildings were destroyed. Tom and his staff at least have a
roof over their heads at night. Yesterday, Sunday, began early in the a.m.
with logistical briefings at the UN Headquarters, where relief agencies
gathered to coordinate services. According to Tom's reports, aid is
beginning to make it out to the folks that need it, which is good news.
Water is being distributed to 52 access points around Port-au-Prince. Some
shops were open and vendors out on Sunday. The task ahead is huge, he says.
Fuel availability is getting critical, which has a definite impact on
service delivery, communications, running generators for electricity, etc.
Tom's team ran out last night and aren't sure how long it will be before
they will get more. Yesterday, Haitians were gathering in their churches
and in small groups for worship and to encourage one another. It was
amazing to hear, all around, groups of Haitians singing and praising in the
midst of all they have experienced this week. He has posted some of his
reflections on a blog: http://fhrelief.wordpress.com/
For those local to Winston Salem - My daughter Suzanne and her friend Alan
are organizing a fundraiser: On Tuesday, January 19th, Little Richard's BBQ
on Country Club Rd. is donating all of their profits for that day to Food
for the Hungry's efforts in Haiti. If you like BBQ, then you have no excuse
not to show up! But even if you don't do BBQ, come out and buy a soda or
fries or something, and feel good about it!
WXII 12 News did an interview with Suzanne and Alan and me, which aired
Saturday night. Here's the link to the video on their website:

I'll keep you posted as I hear more. Thanks for keeping the prayers and
support and hope coming on behalf of Haiti.
Have a great MLK Day!
